Stay Cool, Stay Strong: 5 Summer Heat Survival Tips Every MS Warrior Needs

Hi everyone!

As the golden rays of summer begin to warm our world, many of us in the Multiple Sclerosis community feel a familiar mixture of excitement and caution. While the sunny days invite outdoor celebrations, family barbecues, and quiet moments in nature, summer brings a unique and challenging test for those of us navigating heat sensitivity. In our MS journey, high temperatures are not just a minor discomfort: they can amplify fatigue, blur vision, and slow down our nervous system in ways that feel overwhelming.

Yet, I am reminded of the comforting wisdom in Isaiah 43:2: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you." We are never walking this path alone. Through faith, collective resilience, and practical wisdom, we can protect our peace, guard our energy, and stay truly MS Strong all season long.

Have you ever stepped outside on a July afternoon and felt your energy drain away in a matter of minutes? Have you ever wondered how to enjoy the beauty of summer without letting the heat steal your vitality? I have wrestled with these exact questions on my own survivor journey, learning through trial and error that preparation is an act of self-love and spiritual stewardship.

At the Angels Hearts for Hope Foundation, our mission is rooted in sharing hope and healing through prayer, exercise, and collective resilience. Today, I want to share five vital, heartfelt strategies to help every MS warrior beat the heat, protect your well-being, and thrive with courage.

1. Master the Art of Pre-Cooling Before Going Outside

When summer temperatures soar, waiting until you feel overheated is a recipe for exhaustion. One of the most effective and courageous steps you can take is pre-cooling your body before stepping out into the world.

Pre-cooling involves lowering your core body temperature before heat exposure, giving you a valuable thermal buffer. Think of it as putting spiritual armor on before entering a battle; you prepare your vessel so you can meet the day with strength.

  • How to practice it: Take a cool or tepid shower 30 to 40 minutes before leaving your air-conditioned sanctuary. Gradually lower the water temperature at the end of your shower to calm your nervous system.

  • Pair it with gear: Slip on a cooling vest or a pre-chilled neck wrap while you get dressed. By bringing your baseline temperature down ahead of time, you invite peace and stability into your physical frame, ensuring your daily errands or morning walks remain life-giving rather than depleting.

2. Invest in Smart, Budget-Friendly Cooling Gear

You do not need an extravagant budget to protect yourself from the summer sun. Today, there is a magnificent array of accessible cooling technology designed specifically to support people living with neurological conditions. Exploring these tools is an essential part of building your personal wellness toolkit: something we frequently discuss in our community resources.

Let’s look at some of the most effective, budget-friendly options available to MS warriors:

  • Cooling Neck Wraps and Collars: Lightweight and discreet, these wraps use advanced hydro-crystals or phase-change materials to target the carotid arteries in your neck, cooling the blood flowing directly to your brain. They are inexpensive and easy to toss into a bag.

  • Evaporative Vests: Ideal for dry climates, these vests use natural evaporation to draw heat away from your torso. You simply soak them in water for a few minutes, wring them out, and wear them over or under your favorite outfit.

  • PCM (Phase Change Material) Vests: If you prefer a gentle, sustained chill without the "ice-burn" shock of traditional frozen packs, PCM vests maintain a steady, comfortable temperature (usually around 58°F) for hours. They recharge easily in a refrigerator or cool water.

  • Portable Handheld Neck Fans: Rechargeable, bladeless neck fans are a game-changer for outdoor events or waiting in line. They direct a steady breeze upward toward your face and neck, keeping air circulating constantly.

By equipping ourselves with these vital tools, we reclaim our freedom to move through the world with grace and confidence.

3. Time Your Activity for the Cooler Parts of the Day

In the rhythm of creation, there is a time for the blazing midday sun and a time for the gentle whisper of the early morning breeze. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that "for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven."

When managing MS heat sensitivity, timing is everything. Why fight the fiercest heat of the afternoon when you can align your schedule with nature’s most tranquil hours?

  • Embrace the dawn and dusk: Schedule your outdoor walks, light gardening, or errands for the early morning hours (before 10:00 AM) or late evening (after 6:00 PM) when the sun is gentle and the air is breathable.

  • Give yourself permission to pause: If your day requires you to be out during peak hours, make it a point to seek out shade, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and take a mental health day when your body signals that the atmosphere is too taxing.

As we often say in our community, being MS Strong doesn't mean pushing past your limits until you break; it means listening to your body's whispers so you never have to hear its screams.

4. Create a Dedicated "Cool Zone" at Home

Your home should be your sanctuary: a place of absolute peace, healing, and physical restoration. When the summer heatwaves outside become relentless, having a designated cool zone inside your home can make all the difference in your daily recovery.

  • Designate your sanctuary: Choose a comfortable room in your house: perhaps your bedroom or living room: that receives the least direct sunlight. Equip it with a reliable air conditioner, blackout curtains to block out solar heat, and circulating floor fans.

  • Infuse peace into the space: Fill your cool zone with things that nourish your spirit: uplifting devotionals, comforting blankets, soothing aromatherapy, and plenty of cold, refreshing water infused with lemon or cucumber.

  • See quiet time as sacred: Spend your afternoons in this sanctuary reading, meditating, or simply resting. Give yourself permission to disconnect from the hustle of the world and seek quiet time with your thoughts and your faith. Be well, dear friend, and let this space be your physical and spiritual refuge.

5. Listen to Your Body and Practice Grace

Out of all the survival tips I can share with you, this is the most vital one: listen to your body with radical compassion.

Multiple Sclerosis teaches us profound lessons in surrender. On some summer days, your body will ask you to slow down, stay indoors, and rest. On those days, do not look at rest as a failure. Look at it as an act of courageous self-care.

  • Watch for early warning signs: A sudden spike in fatigue, heaviness in your limbs, cognitive fog, or muscle spasms are gentle reminders from your nervous system asking you to pause and cool down.

  • Extend grace to yourself: We are part of a magnificent, collective movement of warriors who understand that strength is not measured by how much heat we can endure, but by how tenderly we care for our temples. If you need to cancel plans, change your routine, or spend an entire afternoon with an ice pack on your neck, do so without guilt.

As Helen Keller once wisely noted, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and trial can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." Every summer day you navigate with mindfulness and resilience adds to your unshakeable character.
