How to Support Your MS Warrior Without Losing Yourself

Hi everyone! It is such a blessing to connect with you all today. Whether you are reading this as a warrior fighting the daily battle of Multiple Sclerosis or as the steadfast caregiver standing in the gap, I want you to know that you are seen, you are loved, and you are part of a movement that is built on the foundation of hope.

I’ve often said that my journey as an MS survivor isn’t just about my own healing: it’s about our collective resilience. But today, I want to pull back the curtain and talk to the "silent partners" in this fight: the caregivers. I know the weight you carry. I’ve seen the fatigue in the eyes of those who love us most. It’s a vital role, a courageous one, and honestly, a holy one. But here is the truth we often forget: you cannot pour from an empty cup.

How do we support our MS warriors with everything we have without losing the very essence of who we are? How do we remain a beacon of light when the shadows of MS feel long and heavy? Let’s walk through this together, leaning on faith and community to find our way back to center.

The Heart of the Matter: Understanding the Invisible

One of the hardest parts of MS is that so much of the battle is invisible. From the soul-crushing fatigue to the cognitive "fog" that can roll in without warning, our warriors are often fighting a war that no one else can see. As a caregiver, your first act of support is a spiritual one: it’s the gift of belief.

When you take the time to understand the symptoms of MS, you aren’t just gaining medical knowledge; you are gaining a moral compass for your relationship. You begin to realize that when your loved one is irritable or exhausted, it isn’t a reflection of your care: it’s the disease speaking.

But here is the rhetorical question we must ask ourselves: if we spend all our energy trying to fix the invisible, do we stop seeing the person right in front of us? Supporting a warrior means being a partner, not a savior. Our warriors need their dignity preserved as much as they need their symptoms managed. Work as a team. Ask, "How can I support you today?" instead of assuming you have to do everything. This simple shift protects their independence and your sanity.

The Spiritual Anchor: Setting Boundaries in Love

In our faith, we are taught that even Jesus took time to withdraw to quiet places to pray. If the Son of Man needed time to recharge, why do we think we can go 24/7 without a break?

"Taking a mental health day" or "seeing quiet time" isn't selfish; it’s stewardship. You have been entrusted with a life, and that includes your own. I want to encourage you to be well by setting boundaries. It’s okay to say, "I love you, and I am so glad I can help, but I need thirty minutes of silence to reconnect with my spirit."

Scripture tells us that "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters." Sometimes, we have to let ourselves be led to those still waters. Whether it’s through 5 minutes of morning prayer, journaling your heart out, or simply sitting in nature, these moments are the glue that keeps your identity intact. Don't let MS become the only thing you talk about. Keep your hobbies, keep your friendships, and keep your connection to the Divine.

A Moment of Shared Joy: The B Sides Benefit Concert

One of the ways we reclaim our joy is through the power of music and community. I am beyond excited to invite you to an event that is close to my heart and vital to our mission here at Angels Hearts for Hope.

Bryce Valle’s "The B Sides" Benefit Concert is happening on July 18th at 7:00 PM! This is more than just a concert; it’s a celebration of life, resilience, and the heartbeat of our community. Bryce is a truly unforgettable talent, and he is using his voice to lift ours.

The concert will take place at the prestigious The Green Room 42 in the heart of New York City, but because we are a global movement, a live stream is also available! This is the perfect opportunity for caregivers and warriors to take a night off from the clinical side of MS and step into a world of high-energy inspiration and heartfelt music.

By attending, you aren’t just hearing great music; you are contributing to a cause that provides resources and a supportive community for those living with MS. You can see more of our past community triumphs in our gallery.

Practical Steps to Find Your Footing

I want to leave you with some instructional thoughts: soft imperatives to carry in your heart this week:

  1. Seek Out Respite: Do not wait until you are burnt out to ask for help. Reach out to family or friends and let them sit with your warrior while you take a walk or see a movie.

  2. Join a Movement: You are not alone. There are so many of us walking this journey. Visit our resources page to find support groups and advocacy tips.

  3. Audit Your Schedule: Are there things you are doing out of guilt rather than necessity? Give yourself permission to let go of the non-essentials.

  4. Embrace Laughter: Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is find something to laugh about. MS takes so much; don't let it take your sense of humor.

Walking Toward a Hopeful Future

As we journey together, remember that healing isn't always about the absence of disease; often, it’s about the presence of peace. To the caregivers: thank you. Your love is the hands and feet of hope. To the warriors: thank you for your courage.

We are pushing forward, one step at a time, toward a future where MS no longer defines us. I hope to see you: either in person or through the screen: at Bryce Valle’s concert. Let’s fill our cups with the music of resilience and the spirit of community.

Be well, stay hopeful, and remember: we are MS strong.

With heartfelt gratitude and love,
